What is CBM Calculator?
CBM stands for cubic metre and is the unit sea freight is sold in. One CBM is 1,000,000 cubic centimetres, so a carton of 60 × 40 × 35 cm takes 0.084 CBM and a 120-carton shipment takes 10.08 CBM. That figure is what your forwarder quotes against, what determines whether you ship LCL or a full container, and what tells you if your cargo is heavy enough to be billed by weight instead of volume. Lose ten centimetres of empty space per carton across a thousand cartons and you have paid for several cubic metres of air; this calculator shows exactly what the current packing produces.

Why packing density decides your freight bill
At $95 per CBM, 10.08 CBM costs $958. Repacking the same 120 cartons into 55 × 38 × 32 cm boxes gives 8.02 CBM and $762 — a 20% saving with no supplier negotiation. Volume is the one freight cost you can engineer before the goods ever move.
LCL or full container
Rules of thumb: under 12 CBM, LCL; 12–15 CBM, compare carefully; over 15 CBM, a 20ft container is usually cheaper and far faster to clear. The container capacity column in the calculator gives the carton counts behind those thresholds.
Volumetric weight is not just air freight
Sea freight uses CBM, air freight uses volumetric kilos (cm³ ÷ 6,000) and parcel carriers use dimensional weight (in³ ÷ 139). The same shipment can be billed three different ways — the calculator returns density so you can predict which method will apply.
